Thriving since 1960, my garden in a bottle: Seedling sealed in its own ecosystem and watered just once in 53 years
David Latimer first planted his bottle garden in 1960 and last watered it in 1972 before tightly sealing it shut ‘as an experiment’
The hardy spiderworts plant inside has grown to fill the 10-gallon container by surviving entirely on recycled air, nutrients and water

FILIPINO MASTERPIECE 01: “ RITUAL DANCE”  by Roger San Miguel (early 1970’s), GSIS Museo ng Sining, Pasay City, Mero Manila, Philippines. Photography by Alain Austria (c) with permission.
Fernando Amorsolo painted a mural entitled “History of Dance” for the Metropolitan Theater [once the center of Philippine theater and music, the art deco heritage site closed in the late 1990’s and is currently in a very sorry state]. The original painting was meant to complement the grand Filipino art deco style of the theater.
In the 1970’s, the maestro’s opus was allegedly stolen. First Lady Imelda Romualdez Marcos commissioned Roger San Miguel to come up with a replica of the lost Amorsolo.
What came out is not necessarily a replica, but a unique variant or interpretation of the master’s original composition. Oral tradition has it that the face of the native queen in this version is that of the former First Lady.
Yet even this was not spared from the elements and was transferred to the GSIS Museum in a deteriorated state. Restored in 2009, the mural is now one of the jewels of the GSIS Art Museum. Imeldific or not, historically-accurate or just some precolonial imaginative dream…this work surely appeals to me and to the other visitors who were present earlier tonight at the opening of our exhibit INSIGHTS.
